Wooden Crate Packing Formula for Shipping: How to Calculate Dimensions, Volume and Cost

What is wooden packing?

Wooden packing is a protective casing made of wooden boards or beams built to fit the size of the goods, in the form of a crate (open frame) or a closed box. Wood is chosen because it is strong enough to withstand stacking loads, impacts and shocks during land and sea shipping.

When do goods need wooden packing?

Wooden packing is recommended for heavy, fragile, high-value or irregularly shaped goods, especially for long-distance shipments that go through many loading and unloading processes.

Type of goods

Examples

Heavy

Machinery, generators, industrial equipment

Fragile / high value

Glass, ceramics, electronics

Irregular shape

Furniture, statues, steel frames

Long distance / inter-island

Goods passing through many transit points

What is the formula for determining wooden packing size?

For goods with a volume below 1 metre

Length + Width + Height (cm) : 3 x Rp 2,000 (minimum charge Rp 20,000)

Goods with a volume above 1 metre

Length + Width + Height (cm) : 3 x Rp 3,500

How do you calculate the volumetric weight of wooden packing?

Volumetric weight is the weight converted from the dimensions (length, width, height) of an item. Shipping providers compare two figures:

  • Actual weight: the weighed result

  • Volumetric weight: the result of the dimension formula

Route

Volumetric weight formula

Land

P × L × T (cm) ÷ 4.000 =     Kg x Shipping Rate

Sea

P × L × T (cm) ÷ 4.000 =     Kg x Shipping Rate

Air

P × L × T (cm) ÷ 6.000 =     Kg x Shipping Rate

Which is used for the shipping rate: actual or volumetric weight?

The shipping rate is calculated from the larger of the actual weight and the volumetric weight. Because a crate adds to the dimensions, the volumetric weight of wood-packed goods is often greater than their actual weight.

What is the formula for wooden packing cost?

Wooden packing cost = crate volume (m³) × rate per m³. Some providers also apply a minimum charge or different rates depending on the type of goods and the level of complexity. For Sentral Cargo's latest rates, contact our admin via WhatsApp.

Total shipping cost = wooden packing cost + shipping rate (greater weight × rate per kg) + insurance (optional).

Example of a wooden packing calculation

A machine measuring 80 × 60 × 50 cm, with an illustrative allowance of 10 cm per side (a total of +20 cm per dimension):

Step

Result

Crate size

100 × 80 × 70 cm

Volume

100 × 80 × 70 ÷ 1,000,000 = 0.56 m³

Volumetric weight (land/sea)

560,000 ÷ 4,000 = 140 kg

Actual weight (machine + crate)

120 kg

Chargeable weight

140 kg (the larger figure)

Packing cost

0.56 × the applicable rate per m³

The 10 cm allowance is for illustration only. The actual size is determined by the packing team.

How can you save on wooden packing costs?

The most effective ways are to measure your goods accurately, dismantle any detachable parts, and combine several items in one crate.

  • Measure accurately so the crate is not too loose.

  • Remove legs, poles or accessories that can be dismantled.

  • Combine several items in one crate where possible.

  • Consult before packing to avoid excessive packing.

Do wood-packed goods need insurance?

Yes, it is recommended for high-value goods. Wooden packing reduces the risk of damage but does not eliminate it. The insurance fee at Sentral Cargo is 0.2% of the declared value of the goods. Example: goods worth Rp50,000,000 mean an insurance fee of Rp100,000.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

1. Is wooden packing included in the volumetric weight?
Yes. The dimensions of the goods and the wood are both counted, so the volumetric weight is calculated from the size after packing.

2. Which is used for the shipping rate, actual or volumetric weight?
Whichever is larger.

3. What goods should be wood-packed?
Heavy, fragile, high-value or irregularly shaped goods, especially for long-distance or inter-island shipments.

4. How much extra size should be added to a wooden crate?
It depends on the weight and fragility of the goods. The allowance is determined by the packing team, so consult us first to get the exact size.

5. Is the wooden packing cost included in the shipping rate?
It is generally charged separately from the shipping rate. Confirm with the Sentral Cargo team for the details of your shipment.

6. Do wood-packed goods need insurance?
It is recommended for high-value goods. Sentral Cargo's insurance fee is 0.2% of the declared value of the goods.

7. How do I request a wooden packing cost estimate?
Contact Sentral Cargo's admin via WhatsApp +62 812-9699-5996, including the type, size, weight and value of the goods.

8. How do I track my goods after they have been shipped?
Use the receipt check in the Sentral Cargo app, no login required.
